Example:
Images from "Learning to Fly",
North Battleford Comprehensive High School Collective,
2000.
Working through
the collective process, students decided to explore issues around
mental illness. The image of a kite was used as the overall metaphor
for the play. A story eventually emerged about a young man, J,
who is starting to experience breaks with reality, and the ensuing
problems with friends, family and others which arise.
Students
created their characters, wrote biographies for each and helped
to create a latex mask for each (a description of the mask process
is on the Learning
to Fly web site link). The character masks represent J's
distorted view of people - how he sees them now. Music students
created signature music for each character and a haunting thematic
score for the dreams and nightmares.
