Lesson 4 - "A Doll's House" and Finding Objectives

Introduction:
The purpose of this lesson is to review the concept of objectives.

Objectives:

- to convey relationships with other characters in a scene
- to understand a character's motivation within a scene
- to reinforce previously developed dramatic abilities and understandings
- to understand and apply the concept of status

Activities:

Activity 1 - Reading:
Students
are going to read a scene from The Doll's House by Ibsen. The scene covers the following events (10 min.)

Scene Summary - Nora final sees what Torvald is like and tells him that she is leaving. She shows that he does not love her and she doesn't love him. She tells him that she owes it to herself to be independent. She leaves, saying that she was hoping that they could repair the marriage and make it a real one, but that now it is impossible. The play ends with the door closing as she leaves.

Activity 2 - Journal:
After reading the scene have the students respond to the following in their journals. Articles should be at least 1 page in length.

• What is Nora's main objective, and what prevents her from achieving it?
• What is Torvald's main objective, and what prevents her from achieving it?
• For each character, choose ten lines that show the character trying to achieve his or her objective. Record the line and explain how it proves what the objective is.
• Show how Nora's minor objectives change throughout the scene by finding at least 5 lines where what she hopes to get changes.
