Unit 3 - Character
Module 4: Performing
Lesson 4 - Performance Project

Introduction:
The purpose of this lesson is for students to plan a performance, then warm-up and perform as a group outside of class time.

Activities:

Note: Once you have completed your rehearsals, be sure to hold a dress rehearsal with everyone together. Determine the order of performance, length of show and work out any set up problems. It is helpful to assign a Stage Manager for the performances to oversee the entire event.

Activity 1 - Acting Warm Up:

Determine which warm up will best suit them to prepare for performance. Think back to the acting & rehearsal lessons. How can actors prepare their instruments? Body, voice and mind should be considered. Relaxation and concentration can maximized through various techniques you have practiced previously. (10 -15 min.)

Activity 2 - Perform!

You will perform your monologues for an audience. There are a few things to consider:

Where - Where will the performance take place? Do you have lights and sound available? Are there other performance spaces to consider? Sometimes a nontraditional space can spark more creative ideas (in the hallway? in a mall? outside?)

Who - Who will the audience be? Do you wish to make tickets and open it up to the public? Will it be by invitation only? Will parents be invited or only peers? Do you want to invite other classes to view to performance? Will it be performed for the camera, then shown to an audience?

Promotion - Will the show have a poster? tickets? a program? Who needs to be given credit in the program?

Documentation - How will the performance be documented? Who will operate the video camera? Test where the camera person is set up so the person can see and hear the performance, without blocking any audience. Will there be stage photos to capture a moment? (note: take photos before or after the show - not during)

Evaluation:
Performances will be evaluated by the teacher and the student using the evaluation found in the next lesson.

Perform for Video

Students who choose to perform for video should be aware of preparing for the camera's "eye". Plan where the camera will be, will the actor look at it, or ignore it? Check your sound - can the actor be heard? Do you want to use close ups or zooms?
